Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) in the IB Diploma Programme:
Service learning in the Secondary school aims to “Engage students in a three-part process: classroom preparation through explanation and analysis of theories and ideas; service activity that emerges from and informs classroom context; and structured reflection tying service experience back to specific learning goals.” (Jeavons 135). At Westwood, we aim to enable learners to apply the knowledge, understanding and skills developed through each subject area and apply them in meaningful service experiences within the school community and beyond. This application of knowledge, understanding and skills makes their student learning more relevant to life beyond the classroom and provides a platform for them to share such concepts for community benefit. Reflection on their service learning is crucial for self-development and to guide future actions.
CAS at Westwood International School:
CAS is a core component of the IB Diploma and extends upon the service learning previously experiences throughout their school career at Westwood. The learners plan and initiate a project of significant length depending on their personal interests. CAS encourages a student to demonstrate good citizenship through positive involvement in the school community and the community at large, show respect for others and the goals and values of WIS community as an institution, and impacts constructively on peers by setting a positive example of group involvement and personal integrity. Students show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others.
CAS is a compulsory component of the IB Diploma and can be chosen as an optional course of study for IB Certificate candidates. Learners who follow the CAS program must meet IBO specified requirements which include consistent engagement in CAS experiences for a minimum of 18 months, engaging in a balance of Creativity, Activity and Service experiences through this 18 month journey and planning and initiating a project of significant length. Through these experiences learners should be able to meet all 7 learning outcomes and be able to reflect on how they met such, how each has informed their own learning about the experience engaged in and how such knowledge, skills and experience can be used in subsequent experiences and beyond. Learners are required to document their planning, participation and reflections on Managebac and their supervisor of each experience will then review their progress.
Each CAS candidate in Year 12 and 13 have their own CAS Advisors who guide, mentor and monitor the student and their progress throughout their CAS journey. To demonstrate CAS experiences and documentation, the school organizes an orientation at the beginning fo Year 12 to highlight what a CAS experience could look like. Various experiences are planned and initiated by the CAS Coordinator to enable to learners to engage in group projects and experiences.

· Right to Fight Judo lessons for the Women’s Shelter.
· ‘He For She’ campaign against gender abuse.
· Fund raising for ‘Women Against Rape’, Maun
· ‘Feed A Child’ campaign
· Camphill fund raising in support of Autism
· BSPCA support
· Creating community gardens to minimize poverty in a local church.
· ‘Reba Bonna Ha’ football outreach program.
· Volunteering at a local hospital
· Sai center medical screening
· Raising awareness of TB in the local community
· Hosting blood donation drives.
· Teaching and learning at orphanages
Learning about the environmental and medicinal benefits of indigenous plant at Mokolodi Nurseries, creating a landscape with Year 7 learners at Mokolodi Primary and replicating this to create a CAS garden in WIS.
